  • There are many differences between diamond powder and speciality diamond powder, as follows:

  • Conceptual scope

  • - Diamond micropowder: usually refers to diamond      particles with a particle size finer than 36/54 microns, including different types of monocrystalline diamond micropowder, polycrystalline diamond micropowder, etc.1 Diamond micropowder for special purposes: is a   type of diamond powder with a particle size finer than 36/54 microns.

  • - Specialised diamond powder: diamond powder with specific properties and specifications that are further processed or  screened out according to specific applications and special needs on the basis of ordinary diamond powder, such as specialised diamond powder for  composite tablets, specialised diamond powder for wire saws, etc. 23.

  • Production process

  • - Diamond micropowder: Generally, it is produced by crushing, shaping, purifying, grading and other basic processes of artificial diamond single crystal or polycrystal. For example, crushing   diamond with ball mill was a common method, and now it is mostly used in      airflow crusher, which uses compressed air as medium to make material  collision, friction, shear to achieve the purpose of crushing 3.

  • - Special-purpose diamond powder: In addition to the  above basic process, it will increase the special treatment process  according to different special needs. For example, in order to improve the dispersibility in specific working fluid, special surface modification  treatment may be carried out; in order to meet the requirements of specific particle size distribution, more accurate grading technology or      multiple grading will be used.

  • Performance Characteristics

  • - Diamond micropowder

  • o Strong versatility: with high hardness, wear resistance and other basic characteristics, it can meet a variety of  conventional grinding, polishing, cutting and other application scenarios.

  • o Wide particle size distribution: covering a wide  range of particle sizes from coarse to fine, which can be used in general  processing occasions with different precision requirements.

  • - Specialised Diamond Powders

  • o More targeted performance: on the basis of basic properties such as hardness and toughness, more emphasis is placed on a  particular aspect or several aspects of special performance. For example,   the specialised diamond powder used for electronic chip manufacturing   requires high uniformity of particle size and low impurity content in addition to high hardness, in order to avoid damage to the chip.

  • o More precise particle size control: usually with a  narrower particle size distribution range, to accurately meet the strict  requirements of specific processes on the particle size.

  • Areas of application

  • - Diamond powder: widely used in machinery, aerospace, optical instruments, glass, ceramics, electronics, petroleum, geology and many other industrial sectors, used for grinding and polishing  cemented carbide, ceramics, gemstones, optical glass and other   high-hardness materials, but also for the production of various types of diamond tools, such as grinding, chipping, cutting, cutting and so on123.

  • - Special-purpose diamond micropowder: It mainly  focuses on specific high-end or special fields. For example, in the  manufacture of semiconductor chips, there are special diamond micropowders  specifically used for chip grinding and polishing; in the field of  geological exploration, special diamond micropowders for drill bits can  enhance the drilling ability of drill bits12.

  • Product Cost

  • - Diamond micropowder: relatively conventional  production process, wide application, large production capacity, relatively low product cost, and a variety of price levels available in the market,  which can satisfy the general needs of different customers in terms of cost and performance.

  • - Special-purpose diamond micropowder: due to its special production process and strict performance requirements, the production is more difficult, the output is relatively limited, the product cost is usually higher, and the price is also relatively expensive, mainly for the specific customer groups who have high requirements on product performance and are not very sensitive to cost.
