What is the difference between single crystal diamond drawing core and PCD core?

1. Material structure:

Single crystal diamond core is a single diamond crystal with a complete crystal structure and regular atomic arrangement.

PCD core is made of micron-sized diamond particles and binder sintered under high temperature and high pressure. It is a polycrystalline structure with randomly distributed diamond particles and connected together by binder.

2. Performance characteristics:

Single crystal diamond has extremely high hardness and good wear resistance, and the surface finish of the drawn wire is very high. However, due to the anisotropy of the structure, its hardness is also anisotropic, and there are differences in hardness in different directions, which makes the die hole wear unevenly and the product is not round.

PCD core has high hardness, good wear resistance, strong impact resistance, uniform wear during use, can ensure the shape and size accuracy of the die hole, long life, and is suitable for high-speed drawing. And PCD is isotropic on a macro scale, and there will be no uneven wear and out-of-round die hole.

3. Processing difficulty:

Single crystal diamond is difficult to process due to its anisotropy of hardness and the integrity of its crystal structure, and has high requirements for processing technology and equipment.

PCD cores have relatively good machinability, and cobalt-based PCD cores can be processed using processes such as electric spark, laser, and ultrasonic.

4. Scope of application:

Single crystal diamond cores are generally used as fine wire drawing dies or finished wire drawing dies with high surface quality requirements and small diameters, such as the drawing of some electronic component wires and optical fibers that require extremely high surface finish and precision1.

PCD cores are widely used in the drawing of various metal wires, including stainless steel wire, copper wire, aluminum wire, etc., especially in the drawing of medium and coarse wires and high-speed drawing.

5. Cost price:

Single crystal diamond resources are scarce and expensive, especially natural diamonds. Even artificial single crystal diamonds have high preparation costs, resulting in high prices for single crystal diamond cores.

The price of PCD core is relatively low, which is one of the reasons why it is widely used in the wire drawing industry. It can reduce production costs while ensuring wire drawing quality.
